Gerd Nonneman is dean of Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service in Qatar and professor of International Relations and Gulf Studies, having been professor of International Relations and Middle East Politics prior to assuming his deanship. He previously was Al-Qasimi Professor of Gulf Studies and director of the Institute of Arab & Islamic Studies and the Center for Gulf Studies at the University of Exeter. An associate editor of the Journal of Arabian Studies, his recent publications include Al-Mamlaka Al-'arabiyya al-sa'udiyya fi-l-mizan [Saudi Arabia in the Balance] (2012) and “Yemen, Saudi Arabia and the Gulf States: Elite Politics, Street Protests and Regional Diplomacy” (2011); he was editor of Muslim Communities in the New Europe (1993). Nonneman holds an M.A. in Middle East Politics and Ph.D in Politics from the University of Exeter, as well as Licentiates in Oriental Philology (Arabic) and Development Studies from the University of Ghent.
