Kelsey Alejandra Moore is an assistant professor of African American history and Black studies at Georgetown University and a Mellon Fellow with the Democracy and Landscape Initiative at Dumbarton Oaks. Her research focuses on rural Black southern history, religion, development, cultural memory, and the preservation of Black burial grounds. Her current book project, Black Benthic: Desecrated Black Cemeteries in the Santee-Cooper Basin, examines the flooding and relocation of Black cemeteries during a major hydroelectric project. Combining archival research with digital mapping, Moore explores the relationships between Black communities, land, memory, and historical preservation.
