Linda Woodhead is a professor of the sociology of religion at Lancaster University’s Department of Politics, Philosophy and Religion. Her research focuses on religion in contemporary Western societies, with an emphasis on Christianity and alternative spiritualities. Her recent projects explore the rise of atheism, the role of emotion in religion, how gender differences affect theories of religion and secularization, and the historical sociology of Christianity. Woodhead’s recent publications include Religion and Change in Modern Britain (2012, with Rebecca Catto), A Sociology of Religious Emotion (2010, with Ole Riis), and The Spiritual Revolution (2005, with Paul Heelas). In 2011 she delivered the Wilde lectures at the University of Oxford, entitled “Religion in Public: Re-alignments in State, Society and Market.” She was the director of the £12m national AHRC/ESRC Religion and Society Programme from 2007 to 2013. She was a visiting professor at Aarhus University from 2009 to 2012 and has an honorary doctorate from Uppsala University.
