Lydia Adzobu (Ghana) on Realizing Olympic Values Through Culture

August 22, 2012

Respect, excellence, and friendship are intrinsic values that are an essential part of our world and are very much relevant in the twenty-first century. As citizens of the world, these Olympic values provide principles for peaceful and successful living and can therefore not be overlooked.
The value of friendship in the twenty-first century implies extending a helping hand to those who are most disadvantaged in societies we live in. No individual lives in isolation and as dependent as we are on each other we can advance in the achievement of our objectives if we extend a helping hand to each other. In unity lies strength. In a world of diverse people and cultures, showing respect is crucial if we are to coexist peacefully. Showing respect requires that one has reverence for the other irrespective of the other’s tribe, race, or religious belief. Respect highlights the need to recognize that differences exist and these differences should not be reasons why people should look down on others or engage in activities that are discriminatory and incite feelings of inferiority. For anyone who desires to be successful, excellence is key. This value emphasizes the need for everyone, irrespective of his or her field of work, to do their very best to reach the point of self actualization.

Culture provides a powerful tool from which these values can be realized and become an integral part of our lives. Developing a positive culture that encourages self-respect, friendship, and the desire to excel is critical if these values are to be realized in the years ahead. One way of achieving this is through cultural festivals and developing a positive organizational culture.

Cultural festivals, which are yearly events and occur in all parts of the world, provide the opportunity to educate and advocate for the need for people to cultivate the behavior of showing respect to one other, inciting the spirit of friendship, and encouraging people to give out their very best in their endeavors. By designing programs such as cultural plays and cultural games, which highlight the importance of these values during annual festivals, will go a long way to instill and encourage participants and observers to adopt these values for successful living. Corporate bodies and firms can also play crucial roles in the realization of these Olympic values. As these firms employ a large number of people, developing an organizational culture that encourages employees to work excellently, develops mutual respect for one another and creates an environment that promotes friendship. This will go a long way to ensure that these Olympic values become a part of people. Particularly, the human resources department can develop programs and policies that are non-discriminatory and highlight the importance of these values to employees and encourage healthy relationships between subordinates and superiors even as they work in the organization.

Olympic values are indeed relevant in our world today. Developing a positive culture is critical to the realization of these values.
