Pope Benedict's Resignation

By: Paul Elie

February 27, 2013

For the first time in over 500 years, the leader of the Catholic Church is stepping aside. In a video Q&A, Paul Elie discusses the impact of Pope Benedict's resignation on the Church. He says that since the papacy is no longer necessarily a lifetime appointment, it might be possible for a pope to dedicate himself to two or three pressing matters in a pontificate and then step aside. Elie also suggests that the College of Cardinals should select a new pope based on the person and not his portfolio.
