Public Diplomacy in an Age of Faith

Authors: Thomas Farr Jennifer Marshall

January 1, 2009

Tom Farr and Jennifer Marshall examine the heightened profile of religious freedom in U.S. foreign policy, showing that the situation across the globe demands special attention for religious liberty considerations. This chapter, appearing in Toward a New Public Diplomacy: Redirecting U.S. Foreign Policy (ed. Philip M. Seib, 2009), goes beyond the historical relationship between religion and diplomacy to argue forcefully and persuasively for religious liberty promotion as a cornerstone of U.S. public diplomacy. The authors communicate the urgency of this project as it relates to the challenges facing the United States in the Global War on Terror, pointing to encouraging trends in U.S. priorities while cautioning that a greater focus is still needed.
