Public Theology and Socio-Ecological Transformation

December 1, 2025

Developed in a collaboration between the Berkley Center and the Laudato Si’ Research Institute at Campion Hall, Oxford, this working paper by Asmaa El Maaroufi and Simone Sinn examines how Christian and Muslim texts like Laudato Si' and Al-Mizan: A Covenant for the Earth contribute to public theology by linking religious insights with societal and ecological concerns. It argues that interreligious engagement can move beyond declarations to foster justice, systemic transformation, and a more inclusive consideration of both human and nonhuman life in addressing the planetary crisis. This essay is scheduled for open-access publication by Brill/Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht in the Studies on Religious Social Practice series in 2026.
