The Solidarity of the Hopeful

Authors: Thomas Banchoff Pankaj Mishra

October 31, 2025

Our perilous world-historical moment challenges writers and artists to unsparingly reconsider beliefs and allegiances formed during a morally complacent era. As in the 1930s and 1940s, this juncture calls for a fresh solidarity of the hopeful—those who neither accept the world as it is nor turn away from it but see it as something to be engaged with and ultimately transformed. In The New York Review of Books, Georgetown Global Dialogues co-convenors Thomas Banchoff and Pankaj Mishra introduce a series of reflections on literature, politics, and religion that are inspired by the Georgetown Global Dialogues held in Rome in June 2025.
