South and Central Asia

As part of its global mapping of faith-inspired organizations in development work, the Berkley Center and the World Faiths Development Dialogue held a consultation and developed publications and web resources focused on relief and development organizations based in South and Central Asia. The consultation, co-sponsored in Bangladesh by BRAC University's BRAC Development Institute, was held in January 2011 in Bangladesh, and convened scholars and practitioners for a two-day long discussion on the role of faith-inspired practitioners and organizations on issues of global development and equity in South and Central Asia. Through examination of existing literature, along with conversations with faith-inspired development practitioners, academics, religious leaders, and government, NGO, and international organization officials, a companion report identified gender, peacebuilding, and education as issues of particular significance with respect to the role of faith actors working on development.
