Since 2022 a partnership between the Berkley Center's Geopolitics of Religious Soft Power Project and the United States Institute of Peace (USIP) has focused on understanding how the geopolitics of religion shapes peace and conflict dynamics in particular regional and country settings. The most recent thematic series, done with collaboration from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, explores the motivations, effectiveness, and impact of various geopolitical actors attempting to influence local, regional, and international affairs across Asia.
In celebration of the launch of the first batch of publications in the Geopolitics of Religion and Culture in Asia series, the Berkley Center and USIP hosted a virtual event with commissioned authors. Topics of discussion included the increasingly prominent Asian dimension of the geopolitics of religion centered on the activities of China and India. This discussion explored how transnational religious actors employ religious ideas and doctrine as a form of soft power influence (and sometimes also “sharp power”), utilizing them to achieve their political interests. Berkley Center Senior Fellow Judd Birdsall introduced the event, and Julia Schiwal, program officer with USIP's religion and inclusive societies program, moderated.
This event was co-sponsored by the Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs at Georgetown University and the United States Institute of Peace.
