Undergraduate Fellows Explore Intercultural and Interreligious Understanding in Social Media and the Global Market

The Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs announces the 2009-2010 Undergraduate Fellows projects: "New Social Media and Intercultural and Interreligious Understanding" and "When Cultural and Religious Diversity Meets the Global Market."
The Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs announces the 2009-2010 Undergraduate Fellows projects: "New Social Media and Intercultural and Interreligious Understanding” and "When Cultural and Religious Diversity Meets the Global Market.” Student fellows meet every two weeks during the academic year to conduct original research and formulate policy recommendations around their topics. Their work culminates in the spring with the release of a substantial publication of their findings.

The New Social Media fellows explore the role of social media tools in the promotion of dialogue and understanding between religions and cultures. In their research, the fellows consider Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and similar platforms, and study how these mediums foster a vibrant exchange of ideas and knowledge in an increasingly diverse world. Michael Nelson, Visiting Professor in the Communication, Culture, and Technology program at Georgetown, serves as the faculty leader for the New Social Media fellows, with Sara Lichterman as the graduate research assistant.

The Diversity in the Global Market fellows examine the significance of cultural and religious diversity for business today. The group will explore how successful business leaders in the global marketplace are challenged by cultural and religious diversity and practices they use to interact with their counterparts from different cultures. They will also consider how universities can promote tolerance and intercultural understanding among students as they transition into leadership roles in the business world. Patricia Hewlin, Assistant Professor in the McDonough School of Business, and Michael Kessler, Visiting Assistant Professor of Government and Assistant Director at the Berkley Center, are the faculty advisors for the Cultural and Religious Diversity fellows. Sara Singha is the graduate research assistant.
