Over the course of the 2024-2025 academic year, the Berkley Center’s work addressed ways forward in a divided world. As globalization founders amid an upsurge of nationalism and a worldwide crisis of democracy, Georgetown University and the Berkley Center remain committed to intercultural and interreligious dialogue for the common good—core Jesuit principles.
Highlights include:
- Veteran journalist Tom Gjelten joined Georgetown as the 2025 inagural Sakka Fellow. The Sakka Family Religion and International Journalism Fellowship brings to Georgetown University distinguished journalists who have significant experience covering politics, international relations, and the role of religion in public life and world events.
- The Berkley Center launched its new SRE Hub, which aims to strengthen capacity for strategic engagement with religious actors in diplomacy, development, and defense, preserving expertise and promoting cooperation around policy challenges.
- The Georgetown Global Dialogues convened in June in Rome, Italy, around the theme "Human Fraternity in a Divided World: Writers Engage the Legacy of Pope Francis." Leading novelists and public intellectuals gathered over two days to explore Pope Francis’ vision of human fraternity in response to today’s deep global divisions.
- Students explored dialogue, leadership, and global citizenship, presenting their experiences and insights to Jesuit university leaders at the 2025 International Association of Jesuit Universities (IAJU) assembly in Bogotá, Colombia.
