Kierkegaard and Socrates
March 23, 2006
Professor Jacob Howland, McFarlin Professor of Philosophy at the University of Tulsa, presented chapters drawn from his book Kierkegaard and Socrates: A Study in Philosophy and Faith (2006). The colloquium began with commentary by Eugen Nagy, Ph.D. candidate at the Catholic University of America. Howland's book represents the first book-length treatment of Kierkegaard's views on ancient Greek thought through the figure of Socrates; in particular, the relation of pre-Christian reason and Christian faith are juxtaposed. The book is a watershed event in Kierkegaard studies and has important implications for contemporary discussions of the relationship between philosophic reason and religious faith.
