In recent years, the Sahel region of Africa—particularly Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger—has faced complex, intersecting crises, including violent extremism and severe terrorist attacks, resulting in unprecedented humanitarian consequences across the region. The challenges encompass governance issues, urgent humanitarian needs, the development of health and education systems, and enhancing capacity to address environmental challenges. The welfare of the large and growing population, as well as the land itself, is intricately linked to the challenges of stability, humanitarian relief, and initiatives to guide the countries toward a meaningful path of development. The Catholic Church and its regional leadership are dedicated to fostering peace and ensuring interreligious harmony within the region's dynamic, multiethnic, and multireligious communities, engaging with all communities and sectors. In May 2026 a high-level delegation of Catholic leaders is scheduled to visit Washington, DC, to enhance understanding of both the significant challenges facing the region and the aspirations of its population.
This conversation will examine the roles of Catholic peacebuilders, their aspirations, and their challenges. The panel discussion will feature delegation members Bishop Alexandre Yikyi Bazié, Archbishop Laurent Birfuoré Dabiré, Archbishop Gabriel Sayaogo, and Fr. Hermann Ouedraogo. Berkley Center Senior Fellow Katherine Marshall will moderate. Please join us to engage with these leaders and support the ongoing pursuit of peace through religious and community-driven efforts.
