The twenty-fourth Building Bridges Seminar, chaired by Rev. Daniel A. Madigan, S.J., will meet June 15 through 19, 2026, in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. This year’s theme, “Hope: Muslim and Christian Perspectives,” emerged from discussions in the final session at the 2025 seminar held in Tübingen, Germany, and was warmly received by both Muslim and Christian colleagues.
“Hope” is a theme that presses upon all of us in the face of the apparent hopelessness that many may feel in the current world situation. As believers, we ask ourselves what is the basis of our hope, and what hope we can convincingly offer to a despairing world. There is a range of understandings of hope in each tradition. For some, hope can be so focused on otherworldly reality that it fails to engage with the current state of this world. As believers, our hope lies in the power of God to create and recreate. We therefore see our life in the light of the promise of resurrection, while we at the same time struggle with the question of the extent to which God’s power enlists human action in the process of shaping the world according to the divine will.
Over the course of the week, this gathering of international scholars will engage in dialogical close reading of Muslim and Christian texts on the theme of “Hope: Muslim and Christian Perspectives.” The public is invited to the seminar’s opening session on June 15, which will feature overview lectures by Professors Jerusha Rhodes (Union Theological Seminary, United States) and Rev. David Neuhaus, S.J. (Seminary of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, Palestine). Prof. Dr. Mustafa Hasani, dean of the Faculty of Islamic Studies at the University of Sarajevo, and Professor Madigan will introduce the event.
The Building Bridges Seminar is planned and convened by Georgetown University, and this year it is co-hosted by the Faculty of Islamic Studies at the University of Sarajevo.
