A Conversation with Eliza Griswold

Eliza Griswold is one of today’s most gifted writers of long-form nonfiction: in The Tenth Parallel: Dispatches from the Fault Line Between Christianity and Islam (2010); in Amity and Prosperity: One Family and the Fracturing of America (2018), awarded the 2019 Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction; in her intrepid reportage for The New Yorker; and in her new book, Circle of Hope: A Reckoning with Love, Power, and Justice in an American Church (2024). Circle of Hope tells the story of a progressive evangelical church in Philadelphia and its members’ efforts to live out the Gospel in fresh and creative ways—ways very different from those of the conservative evangelicals whose exploits get the headlines.

In this event, Griswold will talk with author and Berkley Center Senior Fellow Paul Elie about the new book, the demands of immersive journalism (whether in Pennsylvania or in Afghanistan), the challenge of writing about complex religious topics for a broad public, and her new role as the director of Princeton University’s Program in Journalism. A reception and book signing will follow; copies of Circle of Hope will be available for purchase during the event.

This event, part of the Faith and Culture Series, is hosted by the Georgetown University Office of the President in partnership with Georgetown's Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs and Journalism Program.
