Spring 2024 Student Symposium: REWA Minors

This project explores the multifaceted role of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) in utilizing media and journalism as tools for extending its influence internationally, focusing on its relationships with Serbia and Belarus. The research delves into how the ROC leverages personal connections and employs religious journalism, official publications, and other media strategies to support its foreign policy objectives and to foster a broader Orthodox Christian framework that aligns with its interests—interests that open the gate for broader Russian influence operations. Some other key areas of investigation will include: the ROC's strategy to influence public opinion in Serbia and Belarus; analyzing the ROC's diplomatic efforts through the lens of Orthodoxy, including how it supports or conflicts with the geopolitics of Russia, Serbia, and Belarus; and, how dissent is expressed within these Orthodox communities.
